       About Clive Hartley
 


 



Clive Hartley has thirty years of experience in the Hospitality industry, after studying at hotel school for four years full time.

Clive initially entered a career in Hotel management before branching off into restaurants and wine bars.
Between 1983 and 1986 Clive jointly ran the award winning Hoult’s Wine Bar in South London, as well as running the adjoining wholesale wine warehouse for two years. During this time Clive developed his love for wine and studied at the British Wine and Spirit Education Trust, completing the Advanced Certificate in Wines and Spirit and commenced studying the Diploma course before leaving for Australia.

Since settling in Australia Clive has continued to study and teach wine first at East Sydney College and now at Ryde College, Sydney. Clive has visited all the major wine regions within Australia. He has travelled extensively overseas and has visited wineries in New Zealand, USA, Italy and France.

He is currently the wine advisor/consultant for Palm Beach Wine Company in Sydney and imports a range of wines into Australia from France and Italy. He currently writes for Winestate Magazine.

Clive is an Honorary member of the Australian Sommeliers Association and also a member of the NSW Wine Press Club.

Clive has completed a number of projects and consults to the National ITAB and Skills Council on wine related curriculum for Australia.

Clive has developed the Wine Studies Course, and the Australian and Imported Wine and Wine Management modules which are conducted at Ryde College.

In 2008 Clive established the Sydney Wine Academy at Ryde College which now delivers courses from the UK's Wine and Spirit Education Trust, internationally recognised and established in over 30 countries world-wide.

Clive has also been instrumental in designing the following specialist courses:

  • Certificate III & IV in Hospitality for Sommeliers

  • Sommeliers Introductory Course ( in conjunction with the Australian Sommeliers Association)

  • Introductory and Advanced Italian Wine (in conjunction with the Italian Trade Commission and Enoteca Italiana)

live is the author of the Australian Wine Guide first published in 1999. This 180 page full colour book is an introductory book on wine aimed at the hospitality and wine enthusiast. The second edition came out in 2001 and the third edition was released in May 2004 and the 4th edition is due out in 2008.
